Lleyton Hewitt hits back at Bernard Tomic and accuses him of ‘threatening’ his family
Bernard Tomic has been called into the headlines after Lleyton Hewitt accused his former Davis Cup teammate of threatening his family.
In a post-match conference on Thursday night, Hewitt claimed that Tomic would not be playing the Australia Davis Cup after he repeatedly ‘threatened’ and ‘blackmailed’ him:
“The threats that I’ve received, for me and my family, that I’ve had for a year and a half now, I don’t think anyone would reach out to a person who speaks like that” – he said.
“Blackmail, threats, and physical, yeah”.
“For me, it was probably the abuse that I copped from him, that in the end I drew a line in the sand and I haven’t spoken to him since".
“He won’t play Davis Cup while I have anything to do with it” –Llyeton added.
When asked to specify the nature of the blackmail, Hewitt claimed Tomic had threatened not to play the Davis Cup.
The former world no.1 (who used to mentor Bernard), also expressed his frustration with the break-down of their relationship and disappointment with the current circumstances:
“For me, the biggest frustration is I feel like I really went out of my way to help Bernie, especially when I first came into the role” – said Llyeton.
“I’ve spent a lot of time with him one-on-one at a lot of tournaments, tried to get a coaching structure and physical team around him to give him the best opportunity. At the end of the day he still kept making the wrong mistakes”.
After speaking to the Herald Sun on Friday, Bernard denied threatening Llyeton and his family and called the professional athlete a “liar”:
"I have never threatened his family” - he said.
“Nice, Lleyton. To think how low of a person you actually [are] and [it’s] why the Australian public never liked you”.
“I got nothing to do with your family and I don’t care what’s wrong with you, you liar.”
