The World’s First Real Hoverboard

1 min read

Although Tony Hawk and Doc Brown tricked us into thinking hoverboards had finally arrived, Los Gatos startup Hendo has taken it upon themselves to introduce the world to its first real live hoverboard.

Several prototypes of the hooverboard have already been produced, and as the video shows, it's able to float about one inch off the ground.

The magic behind the futuristic device lies in its four disc-shaped hover engines. They create a special magnetic field which literally pushes against itself, generating the lift which levitates the Hendo Hoverboard off the ground. Hendo’s floating machine is primarily intended to be self-propelled, although the actions which stabilise it can also be used to drive it forward by altering the projected force on the surface below.

The technology developed by the company has uses far beyond recreational, so they’ve made a development kit available for purchase as well. Although they don’t mention the iconic film throughout their crowdfunding pitch, the influence and inspiration from Back to the Future literally goes without saying.

If you’re impressed with what you see, would like to find out more or show your support, head over to Hendo’s Kickstarter.
