Bad news for anyone heading to Sydney beaches this weekend

This is upsetting

Australia's known around the world for having glorious beaches with crisp white sand and turquoise waters.

But not all our beaches are so clean and refreshing...

More than ten of Sydney's beaches have failed pollution tests, meaning they're likely filled with viruses, bacteria and other gross things. Only six beaches failed the tests in 2015 so sadly things are going downhill.

The number one dirtiest beach was Foreshores in Port Botany.

Worryingly, Coogee, one of our favourite places to take a dip, also ranked as poor.

Just last week, authorities warned swimmers to avoid Coogee Beach due to high levels of faecal matter in the water. Gross.

Following Sydney’s crazy storms earlier in the week, a stormwater drain dumped contaminated water into the beach.

The risk at Coogee isn’t only in the water. Experts warn pathogens could exist in the sand as well.

However, other nearby beaches like Bondi and Clovelly are still considered safe, so all is not lost.
