This touching kangaroo pic is not all that sweet
Sometimes things aren't exactly what they seem to be...
The internet exploded last night when the Daily Mail published a series of photos showing what appeared to be a touching moment amongst a group of three kangaroos in Queensland taken by wildlife photographer Evan Switzer.
The pics showed a female kangaroo, sadly in the process of dying, being held by a male companion while she, in turn, clutched at a joey. To the naked eye, the threesome looking like a little 'roo family. I mean, we could practically ~hear~ the "father" whisper into the mum’s ear, “Don’t worry, my love, I promise to look after little Joey.”
“The kangaroo tried to lift her up and she wouldn’t stand, she’d just fall to the ground. He’d nudge her, stand beside her ... it was a pretty special thing. He was just mourning the loss of his mate,” the photograper Evan said.
Well, it turns out he (and us) completely misread the situation. The Australian Museum’s principal research scientist Dr. Mark Elridge had a look at the pics on Thursday and here’s what he said.
“Great photos of the kangaroos, but I think they are fundamentally misinterpreted. The male is clearly highly stressed and agitated, his forearms are very wet from him licking himself to cool down.
"He is also sexually aroused: The evidence is here sticking out from behind the scrotum (yes, in marsupials the penis is located behind the scrotum).”
So no, old mate wasn’t saying his last good byes, he was actually trying to get it on with a ‘roo corpse. Don't call us cynical when we say - SO MUCH FOR ~TRUE LOVE~.
